Zhukov joined the Red Army in 1918. He steadily rose through the ranks. After the German attack on the Soviet Union in 1941, he soon became the leading Soviet commander. He successfully defended Moscow. He led the counterattack at Stalingrad and lifted the siege of Leningrad. Zhukov led Soviet troops across Poland and on to Berlin.
